What to see in Nicosia
Nicosia (in Greek, λευκωσία, pronounced /Lefko'sia /) is the largest city on Chipre island. Located on the Pedieos River, and like the island, the city of Nicosia is also divided: the southern part is the capital of the Republic of Cyprus, and the northern part is the capital of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. In ancient times, the city was known as a leda, and was one of the twelve old kingdoms of Chipre Island. Nicosia has been the capital of the island for more than a thousand years, and was conquered by the Franks, the Venetians, the Turks and the British empire.
The Historic Center of Nicosia is locked inside a large medieval wall built by the Venetians. That wall is today the best known monument in the city. The doors and bastions of that wall today house important buildings, such as the City Council. The northern part of the city is occupied by the Turkish Government Chipriota, and functions as the capital of the Turkish Republic of Northern Chipre, a state only recognized by Turkey. Nicosia is today the only divided capital in the world.
The city develops with a fast rhythm and has a standard of living of the highest in the world. In addition, it is the headquarters of the University of Cyprus and three other private universities.
